“This could be the worthy Lord John Grey’s breakout novel, as readers are treated to large dollops of Outlander hero Jamie Fraser.”—Booklist

A captivating return to the world Diana Gabaldon created in her Outlander and Lord John series, The Scottish Prisoner is a masterpiece of epic history, wicked deceit, and scores that can only be settled in blood.

London, 1760. For Jamie Fraser, paroled prisoner-of-war, life is coming apart at the seams. In the remote Lake District, where he’s close enough to the son he cannot claim as his own, Jamie’s quiet existence is interrupted first by dreams of his lost wife, then by the appearance of an erstwhile comrade still fighting to rally the Irish. But Jamie has sworn off politics, fighting, and war. Until Lord John Grey shows up with a summons that will take him away from everything he loves—again. Lord John is in possession of explosive documents that expose a damning case of corruption against a British officer. But they also hint at a more insidious danger. Soon Lord John and Jamie are unwilling companions on the road to Ireland, a country whose dark castles hold dreadful secrets, and whose bogs hide the bones of the dead.

The Scottish prisoner

It’s absolutely awesome when I start one of Diana‘s books I can’t put them down. I am completely swept away in the way she writes and in the characters. I feel as though I am in the story itself seeing everything as she describes it feeling the emotions the waves of the boat the smells of the people in the bars the sounds of the horses. I feel like I’m living in the story itself. I love the outlander series and all of the Novelas that go with it.

The Scottish Prisoner

Jamie Fraser is one of the best characters in the Outlander series. This novel takes place in 1760, 14 years after losing Claire. He is now on parole working in the stables of a friend of Lord John Grey. Lord Grey has a mysterious poem and information regarding a plot to overthrow King George II. There are accusations regarding a noble now in Ireland. Lord Grey and his brother enlist the help of Jamie in bringing the nobleman back to England and justice. There are twists and turns in the plot and the plot is woven into a history of the 18th century society. If you like Outlander, this is a similar pleasure.

Loved it! I'm an avid Diana G. Fan. Loved reading some of the detail of certain events mentioned in the Outland series that was not clarified lest there be too much detour from that story. This was a refreshing detour after the fact. I'm still completely in love with Jamie, even more so than Sir John is.

A great gap filler

I really enjoyed the book. I thought it did a lot to fill in gaps in the story line regarding Jamie's relationship to Lord John and William. An enjoyable and relatively quick read. I highly recommend if you like the Lord John books, because that's what this is, regardless of the title.

Awesome! Congratulations on another job well done! I have been reading Diana's work for 20 years and anxiously await every novel. For anyone who hasn't read the Outlander series, it's so worth your time. I cherish every one in my library. This novel being one of the Lord John Grey novels it has plenty of Jamie Fraser in it which was great! I feel every character She writes is so fascinating, whether you love or hate them they all come alive in the most entertaining way, and in our high tech, HD, instant gratification society that is a very impressive task anymore. Diana Gabaldon will be cherished as one of our century's most brilliant authors. She has such a gift of creatively melding historical fact and fictional characters, that they truly come alive and you end up genuinely caring for these people. She understands what every human needs, love AND adventure. I look forward to her next novel with the same anticipation I've had for each one published for 20 years! No one I have recommended her books to has ever come back disappointed. Thank you Diana for your brilliant work, you have an amazing talent and I hope you never stop writing as I will never stop reading and re-reading your wonderful books.

A bitter disappointment! I spent the entire book waiting for it to get to the continuance of Jamie and Claire's story, and it never happened. This is a Lord John Grey story, and I don't even like him. I haven't chosen to read the books that are about him, after I read the first one, and feel that I was misled. This book goes back in time to when Jamie is paroled at Helwater and goes off on a completely different tangent. I have long been a huge fan of Ms. Gabaldon's and dearly LOVE the Jamie and Claire story. I have given no less than a dozen copies of Outlander to friends to get them started on the series. I waited literally years for Jamie and Claire's story to go on, and now apparently must wait more years for that to happen. When it does go on, it is worth the wait. For me, this book was not worth the wait. It saddens me greatly to write this review.

Love Jamie!

Glad you wrote about Jamie's time while Claire was gone. I had long wondered what he was up to while Claire was raising Brianna.

Disappointed

Do not waste your time, huge waste of time. I have never, never been so disappointed in one of Gabaldons books.

The Scottish Prisoner

Great book, even if it doesn't have Claire in it. Good job on the backstory of William, Lord John, and Jamie. I loved the previews of book eight and hope it will be here soon,

Excellent!

Great book, so very well written. Opening the book was like seeing old friends again.

Die hard Gabaldon Fan

Loved it! For those of you who thought it was book 8...it is clearly stated all over her website that it is another LORD JOHN novel. I absolutely love Gabaldon's writing and think the LJG novellas and novels are the perfect fix in-between Outlander Series reads!!! A must read for Gabaldon fans!

The Scottish Prisoner

FYI not part of Outlander series

Fabulous book! For those who have been following the series, this is NOT book 8! This is similar to the Lord John books in that she goes with a certain period of time and certain characters and follows them in a subplot from part/s of her other books. Good character development/supplement for the other books.

Don't buy it

Gabaldon either listened to a publisher or some such regarding the sequence. If you read the outlander series, this will be a disappointment. Claire is not part of the story. Those who thought it would be book 8 will notice rehashed material. Come on girl. That was underhanded! Because of your priorities, the preview doesn't even interest me. What I did discover because of your lost mojo is lots of other highland writers! Good luck on the next one!
